April – Stress Awareness Month

by | 8 Apr, 2026

April is Stress Awareness Month — and it’s a timely reminder that stress at work isn’t just a wellbeing issue… it’s a human factors issue.

In many organisations, we still treat stress as something individuals need to “manage better.”
But human factors teaches us something different:

👉 People don’t fail — systems do.
👉 Stress is often a symptom of how work is designed, led, and resourced.
👉 If we want better performance, we need to design work that supports people — not stretches them to breaking point.

In high-risk sectors like construction and infrastructure, the link is even clearer.
Fatigue, cognitive overload, unclear roles, time pressure — these aren’t just “soft” issues. They directly impact decision-making, safety, and operational performance.

So during Stress Awareness Month, it’s worth asking:

  • Are we designing work with human capability in mind?
  • Do our leaders understand the impact of stress on performance?
  • Are we tackling root causes — or just offering sticking plasters?

This is exactly where the NEBOSH Working with Stress course comes in.

It moves the conversation beyond awareness and into practical action, helping organisations to:
✔ Understand stress through a human factors lens
✔ Identify organisational causes of stress
✔ Implement meaningful, preventative controls
✔ Build healthier, more resilient teams

Because managing stress isn’t about resilience alone — it’s about better work design, better leadership, and better systems.

If we get that right, we don’t just improve wellbeing — we improve safety, performance, and culture.
