Morgan Sindall Infrastructure: Protecting People
Overview
GatewayHSW have been working with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure since late 2022 providing consultancy support for the ongoing evolution of the behaviour and cultural approach across the business.
With such a large business, working across several sectors; nuclear, rail, highways, energy and water, it was important to fully understand what was working well with 100% Safe and to identify areas of continual improvement.
Requirement
The brief was to understand the level of maturity across the different business units and determine the effectiveness of the current behavioural programme – 100% Safe. This was with the aim of reinvigorating the programme and expanding the approach to include health and wellbeing as well as safety, and have a programme that supported the Responsible Business Strategy already in place.
Dr Shelley Stiles and Clare Richardson embarked on a discovery phase, getting to know the business and following the presentation of the findings and recommendations, ‘Protecting People’ was born.
The Solution
Clear successful outcomes were established:
- Align to the company values and the belief ‘that all harm is preventable’
- Clear plan across the Division that develops cultural maturity as a foundation for great performance
- Empowerment across business units where the plan remains flexible to meet customer expectations
- Enable existing initiatives to become more impactful
- Everyone to understand their contribution to achieve great performance
GatewayHSW are engaged to provide ongoing consultancy support to the business during the development and implementation of the behaviour and culture programme: ‘Protecting People’. The approach is very much owned by Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, with GatewayHSW providing advice and practical help in the paced evolution as cultural maturity develops year on year against the five year plan.
The GatewayHSW team have been involved with:
- Consultancy advice for the ongoing management of change; to achieve sustainable long-term improvement
- Contribution towards conferences to maintain the drum beat of communication for Protecting People
- Developing a cultural maturity assessment tool and providing coaching across the business to facilitate effective assessments
- Develop a just and fair culture approach; including tools, training and resources
- Develop an interactive workshop delivered by Morgan Sindall representatives across the business
Protecting People Workshop
During 2024, GatewayHSW provided Morgan Sindall Infrastructure with Choose the Safe Path™ as part of the refresh of Protecting People, their behaviour and culture programme. To support the renewed focus on Protecting People and our Total Commitment where ‘together we protect each other’, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure have hosted interactive workshops throughout 2024.
The workshops have enabled teams to discuss the relevance of behaviours and impact of personal decisions on health and safety, as well as the challenges faced as the company further develops their culture from good to great.
The workshops themselves have been facilitated by Morgan Sindall Infrastructure representatives utilising a fresh and innovative approach, alongside engaging and interactive media based on an award-winning interactive training approach, with the support of GatewayHSW.
Self-delivery of the workshops has given optimum flexibility and efficiency across the length and breadth of the UK with facilitators delivering workshops to over 1,000 people within 5 months. Feedback from attendees remains excellent with the attendees embracing the interactive approach and discussing how the film-based scenario applies to their workplace.
We have been impressed by the roll out of the Protecting people Workshops across the business. The interactive workshop designed by GatewayHSW and delivered by our own people has really captured the way in which we seek to engage and support our teams as we revisit our individual and collective behaviours that impact on safety, health and wellbeing performance.
GatewayHSW have provided a fantastic service from concept through development and then ongoing implementation of the workshops. The high standards they provide have equipped our facilitators with the very best resources to deliver Protecting People to our teams in a novel and interesting way.
Delivery of the Protecting People Workshops support our renewed focus and enables us to create the right environment, culture and behaviour so that everyone can come to work happy and go home to their families healthy and safe ath the end of their day.
