JSM Group Case Study: Behavioural Change Programme
Gateway Consultants (HSW) have supported JSM Group with 2 main phases of Behavioural and Cultural Change; development and implementation.
Development Phase
At the outset, a health and safety culture survey was undertaken for employees, and supply chain organisations. The results of this survey provided invaluable insight into the existing culture of the business; highlighting areas of strength as well as opportunities for improvement. This information informed the strategy whilst also providing a baseline for measuring improvement.
Senior Management and key representatives from within the business participated and were engaged in the Programme from the outset. Workshops were held to discuss results of the culture survey and other performance statistics, compliance with Safety Management Systems, to identify areas for focusing improvement, and securing the commitment of Senior Management for ownership of the Improvement Strategy.
Based on the engagement an Action Plan was developed.
Implementation
A staged approach was taken with a 3-year-plan. The Senior Team completed the NEBOSH accredited Health and Safety Leadership Excellence course, which followed by an initial period of training and awareness sessions across the business. Safety Leadership and Communication training courses have been delivered to all staff, with ongoing activities to ensure that the learning is transferred to the workplace. This is now being cascaded through the frontline supervisory teams to the workforce.
The initial priorities were:

- Streamline and refocus the setting to work process to have a greater focus on risk awareness, moving away from ticking the box.

- Improve the reporting culture through observations, near misses and good practises.

- Review and extend attendance at all health and safety meetings promoting engagement at every level through the effectiveness of the Safety Reps Committee.

- Prioritisation of safety at every opportunity e.g. starting meetings with sharing a Safety Moment.
Since 2019 Gateway Consultants (HSW) have ben supporting JM Group with behavioural and cultural change.
The team continue to advise and support the implementation of the Behavioural Change Programme, through the challenging times of the pandemic and now into the third year running.
