Human factors – heard of it but not sure how it can help?

by | 11 Jun, 2024

We have been providing human factors support on a large infrastructure project for the last 6 months helping with their continual improvement plan. We have looked at the common safety processes of induction, setting people to work and accident investigation, as well as more progressive approaches to supervisor development and coaching, and the evaluation of behaviours. With our extensive practical experience of construction projects, combined with our understanding of human factors tools we offer practical and targeted advice that is targeted at making positive long term sustainable impacts on safety performance.

So how does human factors help? This approach is focus on the individual and how they interact with the world around them. Greater understanding of the systemic factors that generate challenges, poor planning and communication, short cuts, competing demands, not forgetting human performance limitations etc, which have become the recipe for individuals and teams to work with. Applying human factors tools helps with effectiveness of risk management systems through improved communication, planning and task design etc addressing the system as a whole.

We will be releasing a case study overview of this work shortly
