Yesterday Clare Richardson CMIOSH spent the day with Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd. Gateway HSW have worked with Buckingham’s to develop their approach to occupational health and wellbeing. It has been a journey that started 6 years ago with small steps, and we know that like safety, looking after health at work is a relentless activity and our work is never done!

However, it is important recognise how far the business has come it now has:
·   A Steering Group made up of a cross section from the business sectors, led by Ian McSeverny Group MD,
·   Strategy process and procedures for management of health hazards, occupational health and physical and mental wellbeing.
· All staff have mental health awareness training
· Mental health champion and first aiders across all sites and offices with an active support network in place
· Wellbeing champions that support engagement on health and wellbeing
· Calendar of wellbeing events and activities
· Occupational health assessments from safety critical through to mini health checks
· Site mini medicals offered to all on site
· Wellbeing days at site to raise awareness of health hazards and physical and mental health promotion.
· Employee assistance programme with GP 24/7

Yesterday Ian McSeverney Group MD demonstrated authentic leadership for health, safety and wellbeing spending the day with the Champions showing what wellbeing means to him on a personal and professional level. Senior Leadership support is vital to make embed health, safety and wellbeing into the culture. It is fantastic to work with such an engaged group of champions that make a real difference in the workplace!
