Balfour Beatty Case Study: Behavioural Safety Programme

Initially the programme was designed for the Major Projects part of the business, which was then taken across the whole of Construction Services UK.

The support provided over the years include:

    • Development of the company’s behavioural safety strategy and programme.  The approach taken was based on a framework which provided consistency whilst allowing for tailoring to meet specific client needs and demands from individual construction sectors.
    • Undertaking behavioural safety climate survey and safety maturity assessment.
    • Design of a behavioural safety toolkit, which included:
      • Leadership values and behaviours for Directors through to Frontline Supervisors
      • Inclusion of behavioural assessment within performance appraisals
      • Just culture assessment tool
      • Positive intervention techniques
      • Behavioural observation process
      • Behaviours of a learning organisation
    • Development of a Supervisors Skills Programme to enhance soft skills and embed behavioural safety amongst Frontline Supervisors.  This passported scheme was delivered on site over a series of months to Supervisors working in the filed.
    • Production of 5 modules DVD box-set for training behavioural safety to the workforce.
    • Development and delivery of behavioural safety training across the organisation.
    • Behavioural study relating to plant people interfaces resulting in a specific plant safety behaviours intervention programme.
    • A suite of leading indicators were established to measure the behavioural change identified within the Behavioural Safety Strategy so that progress and the effectiveness of specific interventions could be measured.

Between 2010 – 2016 our Principal Consultant, Dr Shelley Stiles was instrumental in the development of the Balfour Beatty Behavioural Safety Programme.

Shelley, supported by a wider team of trainers, were involved throughout the implementation of the programme.

The success of the initial programme with the Major Projects business was then continued into the Construction Services UK business.
